Nervous Patients

Here at Mount Florida Dental, we understand that dental anxiety is common and there are different levels of dental anxiety, ranging from slight nervousness to severe phobia. Unfortunately this prevents some people from visiting their dentist regularly and they can let their oral health suffer as a result.

Initial Consultation

At an initial consultation you can meet with your dentist in person and discuss any worries you have. No treatment will be carried out, but we will discuss your fears and concerns as it is important that you communicate them with us so that we understand.

Ask us about the procedures to make you feel more settled, we are great listeners and deal with these issues on a daily basis. You may find it helps to take a friend or family member with you.

Sometimes all you need is a bit of time, compassion and understanding to put you at ease. If you think it will help, start gradually with a clean and polish then work up to more extensive treatment once you have built up trust and rapport with your dentist. Some patients like to take a personal stereo with them to listen to music during the visit to help them relax.

Other times, you may feel you need something more. We provide dental sedation for those occasions.

Who would benefit from sedation?

•  Anxious and dental phobic patients
• Patients undergoing long or complex procedures
• Patients with prominent gag reflexes

What is Sedation?

Intravenous sedation uses a powerful drug called Midazolam, which is very safe when used by a trained professional. The drug is administered by means of a narrow plastic tube, which is placed inside a vein below the surface of the skin of your hand or arm.

The drugs do not send you to sleep, you will be awake and able to talk to the dentist, but they will calm and relax you so deeply you will probably feel that you were asleep. They also cause some amnesia, so you will probably not remember much of the procedure.

After the procedure, it will take a while for the sedation to fully wear off, so you need to have someone take you home and stay with you until you feel completely normal and alert again You should avoid doing any strenuous activities and you should not drive or operate machinery until the day after the procedure.

We accept referrals from other dentists to carry out treatment under intravenous sedation privately.
